ChatGPT’s three crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, GPTBot), Googlebot and Bingbot, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Apple crawlers, a live test visit as ChatGPT through your firewall or Cloudflare, noindex and canonical tags, and llms.txt.
2. Will AI quote you?
A direct answer in your first paragraph, question-style headings, FAQ schema, Organization schema with profile links, author and update date, and enough readable text in the HTML.

Why websites block ChatGPT without knowing it

robots.txt rules
A theme, SEO plugin or developer adds “Disallow” rules for GPTBot or OAI-SearchBot. Blocking OAI-SearchBot removes you from ChatGPT search.
Cloudflare and firewalls
Cloudflare changed its AI crawler settings in 2026, and some sites now block AI bots by default. Security plugins and hosting firewalls can do the same.
Content AI cannot read
Even when crawlers get in, pages that load text with JavaScript or bury the answer in long intros give AI tools nothing to quote.

How do I check if ChatGPT is blocked from my website?

It reads your robots.txt rules for OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User and GPTBot, and makes a test visit as ChatGPT to see whether your firewall or Cloudflare turns it away. To check by hand, open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for those bot names followed by “Disallow: /”.
What is the difference between GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User?
GPTBot collects pages to train OpenAI’s models. OAI-SearchBot indexes pages for ChatGPT search. ChatGPT-User opens a page when someone asks ChatGPT about it. You can block GPTBot and still appear in ChatGPT, as long as OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User are allowed.
Does blocking AI crawlers affect my Google rankings?
Blocking Google-Extended only stops Gemini training and does not affect Google Search. Blocking Googlebot removes you from Google Search and AI Overviews. Be careful with broad “block AI” switches in firewalls, because some also catch Googlebot.
